3 John

Ἰωάννου Γʹ · The Third Epistle of John · Koine Greek with English, one chapter

The elder writes to his beloved Gaius, rejoicing that he walks in the truth and praising the hospitality he shows to brothers who go out for the sake of the Name. He contrasts this with Diotrephes, who loves to be first and refuses to welcome them, and commends the well-attested Demetrius.

The Greek is the public-domain Nestle 1904 text; the English translation is my own.

Chapter 1

1

The elder, to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.

2

Beloved, I pray that in all things you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.

3

For I rejoiced greatly when brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you walk in the truth.

4

I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

5

Beloved, you act faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers, and that for strangers,

6

who have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God;

7

for they went out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.

8

We therefore ought to support such people, that we may be fellow workers with the truth.

9

I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not acknowledge us.

10

So if I come, I will bring up the works he is doing, prating against us with wicked words. And not content with that, he himself refuses to welcome the brothers, and he hinders those who wish to and casts them out of the church.

11

Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Whoever does good is of God; whoever does evil has not seen God.

12

Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we also testify, and you know that our testimony is true.

13

I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write to you with ink and pen;

14

instead I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face.

15

Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.

A note on the text

The Greek above is the Nestle 1904 edition of the Greek New Testament — a critical text reconstructed from the earliest manuscripts, now in the public domain. The English alongside it is my own working translation, kept fairly literal so that it tracks the Greek closely; it is not one of the standard published versions.

The English here is my own translation, produced with the help of AI tools, and the Greek has been transcribed the same way; both may contain errors. It is shared in good faith for general interest and study — not as an authoritative or scholarly edition — and should be checked against a critical Greek New Testament and an established translation before you rely on any wording.
