Jude

Ἰούδα · The Epistle of Jude · Koine Greek with English, one chapter

Jude, brother of James, sets aside the letter he meant to write and instead urges his readers to contend for the faith once delivered to the saints, for certain ungodly people have slipped in unnoticed. He piles up examples of judgement—Israel in the wilderness, the fallen angels, Sodom, Cain, Balaam, Korah—and ends by building up the faithful and giving glory to God their Saviour.

The Greek is the public-domain Nestle 1904 text; the English translation is my own.

Chapter 1

1

Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:

2

May mercy, peace and love be multiplied to you.

3

Beloved, while I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write urging you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

4

For certain people have crept in unnoticed, those long ago marked out for this condemnation, ungodly ones, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

5

Now I want to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterwards destroyed those who did not believe.

6

And the angels who did not keep their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling he has kept in eternal chains under gloom for the judgement of the great day.

7

Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, which in the same way as these indulged in sexual immorality and went after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

8

Yet in the same way these dreamers also defile the flesh, reject authority and blaspheme the glorious ones.

9

But when Michael the archangel, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not dare to bring against him a blasphemous judgement, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”

10

But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and by the things they do know by instinct, like irrational animals, they are destroyed.

11

Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain, abandoned themselves for profit to Balaam’s error, and perished in Korah’s rebellion.

12

These are the hidden reefs at your love feasts, feasting with you without fear, shepherding only themselves; waterless clouds carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted;

13

wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of darkness has been kept for ever.

14

It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with his holy myriads,

15

to execute judgement on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds that they have done in ungodliness, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

16

These are grumblers, malcontents, following after their own desires; their mouth speaks boastful things, flattering people for the sake of gain.

17

But you, beloved, remember the words that were foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ,

18

how they said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following after their own ungodly desires.”

19

These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.

20

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,

21

keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

22

And have mercy on those who doubt;

23

save others by snatching them out of the fire; and on others have mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

24

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy,

25

to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and to all ages. Amen.

A note on the text

The Greek above is the Nestle 1904 edition of the Greek New Testament — a critical text reconstructed from the earliest manuscripts, now in the public domain. The English alongside it is my own working translation, kept fairly literal so that it tracks the Greek closely; it is not one of the standard published versions.

The English here is my own translation, produced with the help of AI tools, and the Greek has been transcribed the same way; both may contain errors. It is shared in good faith for general interest and study — not as an authoritative or scholarly edition — and should be checked against a critical Greek New Testament and an established translation before you rely on any wording.
